The most notable official press statement of Microsoft is “they are pursuing a huge investment in consolidating developer platform protocols for services on the open, standards-based Atom format (RFC4287) and the Atom Publishing Protocol (RFC 5023) for Windows. They started with the Windows Live Spaces Photo API, then the Application-Based Storage service, and the Astoria ADO. Net Data Services has announced at mix that a few more surprises in this field will be available. Google’s GData, which is also Atom-based, would illustrate that two of the biggest web API providers are now supporting the same REST-based model in their services. Details about this development will further be released over time and we will see how the executions will inevitably vary from vendor to vendor.
